Over the past 2 and a half decades, AKIN has carved a well earned reputation on the London Soul/Funk underground circuit both as a club dj and music radio presenter, one with a discerning music ear combined with a dance floor friendly sensibility.
Akin's interest in music can be traced back to his parents' (predominately Jazz) record collection at the Kingsbury, NW London family home, and an impressionable month long stay in his father's native Nigeria soon after he started high school. Soul and Reggae themed radio shows on Radio London, Capital, and Radio Luxembourg, and later pirate stations Radio Invicta, JFM, and Horizon would open his eyes to a whole new world of music : namely the phenomenal Soul, Disco, Roots Reggae and Jazz-Funk releases of the day.
London's vibrant West End Soul/Disco/Jazz-Funk club scene of the late 1970s/early 1980s pioneered at venues Crackers, 100 Club, Gossips, Spats, (upstairs @) The Horsehoe, and Electric Ballroom (to name a few) would take his music passion further, and the many great dancers that frequented who gave rhythmic meaning to the music played.
His first taste of the dj bug came as a teenager in 1981, being invited to spin at his 6th form high school disco, with his music passion initially devoted to record collecting and attending concerts of his many music heroes, enabling him over the years to amass a considerable vinyl collection and knowledge base.
Akin's radio career started in 2007 with a 3 year long stay at West London based station Hot96fm. From there, would be stints at TSOL Radio, Back2Back, Colourful Radio, and most recent a four year long run at Our Salsa Soul Radio, in which he has been able to build a sizeable following among radio and online podcast listeners.
He currently djs at the popular 'Funky Stuff' monthly club night @ The Ritzy Cinema, Brixton allongside Fitzroy 'The Soul Survivor' Facey and Leslie Michel. Akin also forms one half of newly formed dj collective 'Afro-Alternative', a music promotions project co-founded in late 2023 with fellow club/radio dj Victor Anderson, that had its successful launch at the BBE Store in Hackney, while 2024 would see him make his overseas dj debut at the week long 'Soul In The Algarve' event in Portugal.
Akin has been hugely excited about joining Street Sounds Radio and the opportunity to share with listeners his lifelong music passion. Whether it be club, radio or present day online video, his dj philosophy has always been to deliver the very best in both vintage and newer quality Soul, Funk, Disco-Boogie and Jazz inspired sounds.
