Chris Stewart

In 1981, Chris Stewart created the legendary Soul Music Radio Station Horizon Radio. It became became the first 24hr Soul Music Radio Station in Europe, broadcasting from London. The station reached millions across London and the Home Counties, bringing Soul Music to the ears of listeners for the first time. Horizon Radio, was an unlicensed radio station, but still managed to set the standards no other radio station (unlicensed) was able to match. The station was the first to do outside broadcasts (1982) from Camberwell London. Live club events followed when Horizon took the music into clubland from venues all across London. The final close down event on the 15th September 1985  (8 hours) was broadcast live from the Harrow Leisure Center.  Horizon Radio opened the doors for today’s soul radio stations on the Internet and showed the need for more music genre radio stations in the UK. Horizon Radio voluntary closed down on the 15th of September 1985 to apply for a new radio license to be issued by then Independent Broadcast Authority (UK Government Body) and said in its close down it would never broadcast again unless it was licensed. The only station to live up to it’s pledge in the document it submitted to the IBA.  The phases “Soul Family” and “Roadblock” were the creation of Horizon Radio and only one person knows how the phrase “Soul Family” came about in August 1983.  Join Chris Stewart from 4pm - 7pm every Tues & Thurs.

Our message is in the music, we are one family under a groove! Street Sounds has had vinyl running through its veins since 1982.
