Clive Gardiner

Clive Gardiner is a musician, songwriter and producer best known for being half of McKenzie & Gardiner, a renowned OG Britfunk duo from London respected by serious cratediggers, rare groove and boogie fans in Europe, USA and Japan for their sought-after 1980s catalogue including a 1983 12” single “From Time” on Streetwave Records (the home of Street Sounds). McKenzie & Gardiner reunited in 2020, and since then have released 10 new singles. They have accrued more than 2 million plays on streaming services, and sold out limited edition vinyl releases through partnerships with CQQL Records (USA), Saph Records (France), Rough Trade (UK/USA), Avant-Garde Records (France) and Juno Records (UK). Clive grew up in Southall, west London, and started DJing, clubbing and gigging as a teenager, soon building up an extensive knowledge of soul, funk and boogie. He has always relished curating music for different audiences, and career highlights include programming jukeboxes for Pioneer Europe, making compilation albums and music video releases for BMG Music International and becoming an expert playlister at UK music streaming service We7 (co-founded by Peter Gabriel) which was bought by Tesco in 2012. That same year, he was voted “one of the Top 10 most innovative, interesting and influential people in British Music” by the Hospital Club and Time Out London (#hclub100). Professionally, Clive worked in senior roles in the music industry in the UK, Europe and in Asia with many successes in breaking mainstream artists internationally. Currently, Clive runs his own ‘tiny funk’ record label Headstretch Records and music publisher Funky Poobah Music Publishing, and plays, produces and mixes his own songs and all McKenzie & Gardiner releases. He also produces and remixes other artists under the name Headstretch. Clive is delighted to join Street Sounds Radio with a monthly show on Monday nights on rotation at 9pm-11pm called “London Soul Patrol”. On the menu is a main course of perfectly seasoned 80s funk, soul and boogie with a tasty side dish of more recent morsels and some surprises and stories along the way. “Street Sounds Radio has a fantastic, passionate and loyal audience and a super-talented roster of presenters. Music has been the soundtrack of my life, and it’s a joy and a privilege to be asked to join this thriving, vibrant family, and to share some of the magical sounds that connect, enthral and excite us all. Come and join the journey at London Soul Patrol.”

Our message is in the music, we are one family under a groove! Street Sounds has had vinyl running through its veins since 1982.
