Growing up in a very social community in London, music was everywhere. Digging through my parents' vinyl collection, a song that has stuck with me was Indeeps 'Last night a DJ saved my life' when I was about 9 or 10. My primary school had wet play discos, and we would dance to Salt n Pepa 'push it'
At 13 I had received some vouchers for Boots and brought my first 7" vinyl De La Soul 'Me, Myself and I' along with 2 I won't mention haha, and so my eclectic taste was born.
In 1995, I was lucky enough to go to Glastonbury's 25th anniversary festival and saw the likes of Tricky, Massive Attack, The Prodigy, Portishead, and many many more bands from across other genres.
I was hooked on live festivals and concerts and dj events over the next couple of decades.
Then, in 2018, I brought a cafe bar, and we became known as a cosy live music venue for bands and djs. Through this, we got to know people in the local music, and I got the opportunity to have a show on Conquest Hospital radio.
Then lockdown came, and the bar was no more. I joined VDubRadio in 2020, and when restrictions lifted, I had the opportunity to go to Bristol Volksfest and Busfest and dj on the largest scale I'd ever done before. It was amazing to see so many people dancing on such a large scale.
I moved to Soul Music Radio in 2023 and played my first show on their first day. I enjoyed playing out on Thames' boat and being a part of the Soul scene.
More recently, I've been playing out with other djs in Hastings and Rye, which is always great fun.
I'm looking forward to being a part of Street Sounds Radio with its long-standing heritage in the music scene. I'll be bringing an eclectic mix of hip hop, funk, soul, trip hop - old and new for your listening pleasure Wednesdays 1- 4 on Laineys Boutique.
