Mark Cookman's love and passion for music started in the early 80's at secondary school. This is where he came into contact with early Electro and Hip-Hop cassettes, which led him into an addiction for buying vinyl, and growing his large record collection. It wasn't until 1986 that Mark started his Professional DJ career by helping out his local mobile Disco. By 1987 he was going solo, with his own van and disco, he even had a driver as he wasn't old enough to drive. After leaving school and attending an Art and Design college in London and gaining subsequent work in the West End, Mark witnessed the birth of House Music. This lead to him buying many records in his lunch hour as he expresses that it was “a truly special time to be a dance music lover and DJ, both in front of ravers and playing on radio”
Fast forward to 1991, a recession and redundancy later, Mark found himself taking a job in his local record shop (John Payne Records in Hayes, Kent). He later purchased and ran the shop until 2003, this led him to being booked for nightclub work all over the South East of England, including The Ministry of Sound, Connaught Rooms, Chelsea FC (Penge Party), and Secrets Romford, just to name but a few. He later opened The Bridgebar, Beckenham in 2004 and is resident there to this day. He is known for his epic House and Garage sets twice a month, on Saturday Night at the bars 80's Groove and Club Classics nights. During these years Mark has released many records under various names. He is well known for The MEC Project for his Evolving Dance label, but also created many Re-Edits and Megamixes including work featured on DMC.
In 2013 Mark's love and respect for Street Sounds was recognised when he became an Admin for The Official Facebook group. This is a position which he continues to cherish, bringing his knowledge of over 30 years of passion for buying, playing and making music to many like minded people. He sees it to be an absolute honour to be involved with Street Sounds, and now Street Sounds Radio!
