Veteran Soul and Funk DJ Al Bendall, aka Al B, remains very much at the heart of the Soul scene in his home city of Bristol and he has no plans to hang up the headphones anytime soon.
It all began in the late 1970s when Al walked into a bar and heard Movin’ by Brass Construction. That moment changed everything. He immediately fell in love with the Funk, beginning a musical journey that has now lasted for more than four decades.
Al started DJing in 1979, securing his first residency at Bristol nightclub The Turntable. From those early days behind the decks, he went on to establish himself as a respected and knowledgeable DJ with a genuine passion for Funk, Jazz-Funk, Soul and Disco.
Fast forward to today and Al remains an important part of Bristol’s music scene, co-promoting and DJing at the popular Soul City club night, where he continues to share the music that first inspired him all those years ago.
Over the course of his career, Al has enjoyed some memorable experiences behind the decks. Highlights include working alongside the legendary Roy Ayers, DJing internationally in Ibiza, Marbella and Tenerife, appearing at the Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show, and playing at Funky Nation, upstairs at the world-famous Ronnie Scott’s in London.
Alongside his club career, radio has become another major part of Al’s musical life.
With more than 15 years of broadcasting experience across FM, DAB and internet radio, Al has built a reputation for shows packed with carefully selected music and genuine knowledge of the records he plays.
His speciality remains the sounds that have been with him from the beginning, original ’70s and ’80s Funk, Jazz-Funk, Soul and Disco classics.
On Street Sounds Radio, Al brings all of that experience, knowledge and passion together for Get Down Saturday Night.
Expect two hours of serious grooves, timeless classics and the kind of records that have kept dancefloors moving for generations.
