Freddie Benson

Freddy Benson - Late Night Express (Sun 10pm - 12am) 2026.png

For Freddie Benson, it all started at the age of just 11.

When the entertainment failed to turn up for his school disco, Freddie Benson decided there was only one thing to do, he raced home, grabbed his record player and returned with a box of 7-inch singles under his arm, determined to save the day.

And save the day he did.

The first record Freddie played was Jackie Wilson’s iconic Higher and Higher (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me). The reaction from his young audience said it all and Freddie knew there and then that entertaining people through music was something he wanted to do.

As a teenager, Freddie and his friends regularly travelled into Central London, immersing themselves in the buzzing midweek club scene and searching out the latest sounds.

That passion eventually developed into a career that took Freddie into radio broadcasting, alongside mobile and club DJing, giving him plenty of opportunities to share the music he loves with audiences both on the airwaves and on the dancefloor.

Freddie is an avid lover of all things Jazz and Funk, a passion that was cemented after seeing Earth, Wind & Fire live in 1982, an experience that left a lasting impression.

And despite all the changes in how we listen to music, Freddie remains a proud vinyl junkie.

Ask him to name his favourite record and you may get a different answer every day. For Freddie, that's part of the magic of music, different records connect with different moments, places and memories.

Above all, Freddie loves the way a great tune can instantly transport you back in time. It's those memories, emotions and musical discoveries that he looks forward to sharing with listeners every week on Street Sounds Radio.
